Workforce Development

There is now a recognition in the public sector that there are a lot of people who work with children young people and families who are part of the voluntary and community sector's workforce. One of the priorities of the Every Child Matters drive to improve outcomes is about ensuring the people delivering services are properly trained, recruited and developed.

In Manchester, Voluntary Youth Manchester takes a lead on the workforce agenda for the children, young people and families voluntary sector, working with the Children's Workforce Development Council and the Manchester City Council Learning and Development Unit.

During 2008, VYM have been working to develop a profile of the local children, young people and families voluntary sector workforce. The report on their findings is available to download here:
Also in development is the Manchester Children's Workforce Strategy. This covers the public, private and voluntary sectors and there is now (November 2008) an opportunity to give feedback on the latest draft. It can be downloaded below.

Resources
  • NCVCCO and Homestart produced "A Beginners Guide to Children and Families Workforce Development" for individuals and organisations that are uncertain about what 'workforce development' means in relation to children's services.  This booklet introduces the main features of the children's workforce development agenda and explains why these are important.  It concentrates on the basics but includes information about where to go to find out more. Download the report from NCCVO (pdf)

  • Skills for Care, Skills for Health and Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) have produced a workforce development funding guide aimed at employers in the social care and health sector. Click here to download a copy (word).
