NHS Manchester
The local NHS in Manchester includes a number of organisations or "trusts". These are listed below - click on the name of the organisation to visit their website:
NHS Manchester
This is what used to be known as the Primary Care Trust. Their role is now split into two distinct functions which will probably become separate organisations during the next few years:
- Commissioning services - planning and purchasing services from other organisations such as GPs, hospitals and increasingly private and voluntary sector agencies.
- Providing community-based services. This is now a separate division called "Manchester Community Health" and includes services like district nurses and health visitors.
NHS Manchester Membership scheme
NHS Manchester has established a "membership scheme" which is a database of local people who want to receive information and be involved in making decisions about the way health services are planned and delivered in Manchester. All NHS organisations are bound by law to consult the public on changes to the services they provide, but increasingly there is recognition that involving patients and the public regularly provides good information and good ideas for improving the quality of services.
