Adult Social Care
"Social Care" is a tricky term to describe because it covers such a huge range of services including
- care homes
- disability equipment and adaptations services
- personal assistants & paid carers
- support for unpaid carers
In this section of our website we focus on social care for adults - services for children and young people are covered in the children and families section.
Manchester City Council's Adult Social Care Department is responsible for ensuring that services are available across the City. It does this by buying services from other organisations such as private care homes, private care companies and voluntary and community sector organisatons - although Manchester City Council also provides some services itself, this has reduced over the years.
More information about social care in Manchester can be found on the City Council's website
Manchester City Council's Adult Social Care Department holds a briefing session every six months for voluntary and community sector organisations. Agendas and notes of these meetings are now available on the City Council website:
Increasingly, social care is no longer being commissioned centrally by
the Department, but people using services are being given direct
control over the funds which would be spent on providing their care and
support. This is the personalisation
agenda more information about how this is being developed is available
in a special section on this topic - see the menu on the right.
Note: MACC uses the term "adults" to refer to people over the age of 18: some agencies refer to "adults" and "older people" as being different - as if older people aren't adults! What people usually mean by "adults" is actually "adults of working age" that is aged 18-65....although confusingly some people describe "older people" as being anyone over 50!
